Noah had a very busy day today. He had his picture made this morning and then we drove down to the Clay County Fairgrounds for the Scottish Games Festival. Noah was not too interested in the games, but he did like the petting zoo and the frisbee dogs. Afterwards we met Brad and Heather for dinner where Noah got to hang out with his younger girlfriend Kathryn.

We had a great time in Virginia last week celebrating Noah's birthday with his family there. Aunt Shelley was kind enough to host it at her house and bake Noah a special banana "smash cake" that he loved! Aunt Regina ordered a wonderful Curious George cake to feed all 46 of us! He got lots of great new toys and clothes- thanks everyone for making it such a special day!

Dad Moments

For those of you reading without kids, here are some moments that I have found myself really enjoying lately... and if anyone had tried to tell me, prior to me experiencing them myself, how special they would feel, I would of told them how stupid they were.

I just pulled some paper out of my shirt pocket... it was ripped up and half moist, from where Noah had been trying to eat it. I had started putting things in that pocket this morning on the airplane to distract him and keep him from annoying the other passengers. It worked and he started putting everything he could find down into that pocket. It bought us a total of 143 seconds, before he wanted something else. But, I had forgotten about it. Just now when I leaned forward I heard the crinkle I looked down and saw that I had not removed all of it when the friendly Southwest steward had come to collect my trash. I don't know why, but pulling it out and throwing it away, made me smile.

That is one of the little "dad momemnts" that I find myself getting sappy about. There are also the more obvious ones like playing "fort" with Noah. Where the boys hide under the blanket and then open the "door" and say "hiii" to Mom or Granny.

There is how he tucks his hands under himself when you pick him up if he is tired. Or how he is learning to hug... that is a great moment! And how I don't mind that when he is really feeling fond of me, he opens his mouth for his version of a kiss. Yeah, I know it sounds strange, and yes, it requires more then one wipe to get it all off after he is done with his show of affection.

But I know it is all temporary. So I just try to sit back and enjoy it, and try not to think about the day that his friends tell him that kissing his Dad is gross. And try harder not to think about him believing them.

First 1st Birthday

Noah & Mommy

Noah gets to celebrate his first birthday twice! Last weekend we had a party in Jacksonville at our house for our family and friends that live in Florida. Noah had a great time playing with Kirby, Abby, Zack, Caroline, Jack, Andrew, Kathryn, Jack and Travis. He had his own little birthday cake to make a huge mess with. He didn't really like when everyone sang happy birthday to him, but he didn't cry either. Lots of thanks to Grandma, Sarah and Heidi for all of their help with the party. We are headed to Virginia this weekend to do his Second 1st Birthday. Be sure to check out all of our pictures.

Happy Birthday Son

Dear Noah,

This last year has been an interesting one. While by no means an easy one, all of it's complications were easily forgotten. For the first time in my life I have something so concrete, so centering, so real that I know I can take on anything. For the last 365 days I have had days that I wanted to cry, days I wanted to yell and days I wanted to quit, but then you smile and it is all insignificant.

On this night, one year ago, your mom and I were scared out of our minds, but pretending to play the part of the cool parents who knew what they were doing. The hospital has a way of building you up with that false hope. The real challenge came when we got home, put you on the bed, sat down next to you, looked at each other and said "What Now"? We should of never asked, because you have been more then willing to let us know what we should be doing since.

So we read, followed our instincts, called our moms, talked to friends, and figured it out. I let you fall out of a chair on your head (it was a small fall... onto carpet, and you only cried for 12 seconds), Mom spoiled you by feeding you at your every whimper until the doc told her to stop (and I buckled her down). We let you get a nasty diaper rash, and let our cat attack you.

But you are doing ok.

You make us happy. You make us laugh. You make our family complete.

You melt away my stress and you make me want to live forever. You are doing just fine.

Happy First Birthday.

I love you,
Dad

Last Day of his zero year

After tomorrow, Noah will no longer be Zero years old! We are excited about him turning 1 tomorrow and can't wait for the parties we have coming up!

This past weekend the whole family went up to see Greg and Elizabeth get married in Charleston. It was a lot of fun, and Noah got to see his future girlfriend Annie, and hang out with Ruthie and Stan again (thank you guys for watching him while Mom and Dad were out being adults!)

For those of you that know my older sister, Leigh, she is making the trip to Alaska right now, and is going to live out there for a few months. You can follow her trip on her blog: Leigh Bird in Alaska.
